The wife of a 34-year-old fisherman who was fatally stabbed at Albion Front on Sunday night is demanding justice, saying she remains shocked over the death of her husband, whom she described as being a close friend of the man now in police custody.
Dead is Franklyn “Frank” or “Franky” Sauers of Glasgow Housing Scheme, who, according to police, was found lying in the living room of a house at Albion Front with stab wounds to his ribs and neck.
Sauers was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His wife, 30-year-old Varund Sehadeo of Lot 247 Belvedere Village, Corentyne, told reporters that she is struggling to understand how the incident occurred, particularly because her husband and the suspect had been working closely together as fishermen for several months.
“They were very close friends. That is what shocked me,” Sehadeo said, while calling for justice for her husband and their young child.
According to Sehadeo, Sauers left home around 16:00 hours on Sunday to collect someone from Canje and transport them to the Corentyne. She said he later went with his fishing colleagues to purchase snacks, drinks and water for the following morning.
At about 21:00 hours, Sehadeo said she received a voice message from the wife of one of the fishermen asking whether her husband had left with Sauers.
She subsequently video-called Sauers, who answered and told her that he was going to drop a man known as “Baba” home before returning.
Sehadeo said that approximately seven minutes later, she received another call from the woman, who was screaming and reporting that Sauers and Baba were “joking” and had gotten into an altercation.
She immediately left for the location with her son and brother.
Upon arrival, Sehadeo said Sauers’ vehicle was still running in front of the house. She rushed inside and found her husband lying in a pool of blood.
“I ran to him and I said, ‘Babe, wake up, wake up,’” she recalled, adding that Sauers appeared to breathe but barely moved.
She said her son also tried to wake his father.
Sehadeo told reporters that a man was sitting outside the house when she arrived, while another man was inside. She said she confronted the man who was nearby and asked what had happened to Sauers, but he denied doing anything.
She also said that a knife was initially seen on a sink but was missing by the time police arrived.
Police subsequently arrested 28-year-old Videsh Singh, a fisherman of Albion Front, at the scene. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
Sehadeo said Singh was the captain of the fishing boat on which her husband worked and that the two had been working together for approximately four to five months.
She said Sauers had never complained to her about having problems with Singh and routinely picked him up in the afternoons to purchase supplies for their fishing trips.
The grieving wife said she is unaware of what triggered the confrontation and disputed reports that there had been a misunderstanding at a supermarket.
“I want justice. We all want justice,” she said.
Sauers leaves behind his wife and their child along with other relatives and friends.
