The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) has ordered the removal of more than 45 shipping containers being stored on a residential property at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, after finding that the activity was unauthorised.
According to the Ministry of Housing-CH&PA, officers from the Authority’s Enforcement Department visited Parcel 1614, Plot B, Herstelling over the weekend, where they observed the containers being stored and stacked on the property. No one was present at the location at the time of the inspection.
The Authority said the property is approved for single-family residential purposes and permission had not been granted for the storage operation.
CH&PA also raised concerns about the manner in which the containers were stacked, saying this poses a potential safety risk to persons in the surrounding area.
As a result, a Notice of Contravention has been served, ordering that storage activities at the property cease immediately and that the containers be removed within this week.
The Authority reminded property owners and occupiers that changes in land use and other developments must comply with planning requirements and receive the necessary approvals.
“The Authority will continue to actively monitor housing schemes and take enforcement action against unauthorised development and activities that breach planning regulations or the approved use of residential lands,” CH&PA said.
It added that enforcement efforts will continue as part of its responsibility to protect residential communities and promote orderly development.
