Police are investigating a series of incidents reported on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, in the Vigilance-Buxton area on the East Coast of Demerara.
According to police, ranks heading to Vigilance around 4:40 p.m. encountered several persons who had blocked access points with burning tyres, wood and other debris.
The Guyana Fire Service was called in, but firefighters reportedly came under attack as persons hurled debris at them and continued adding combustible materials to the fires.
Police later received reports that a sand truck parked along the Railway Embankment at Buxton had been set on fire. Ranks responded and found the vehicle with extensive fire damage to its front cabin. The blaze was subsequently extinguished by firefighters.
Police also received reports that several loud explosions, suspected to have been gunshots, were heard in the area shortly before the truck was discovered on fire.
CCTV cameras have been identified in the surrounding area, and footage is expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.
No arrests have been made.
Police patrols remain in the area as investigations continue.
