Miner remanded over 36-pound cocaine haul concealed in frozen fish

A 44-year-old miner was on Wednesday remanded to prison after he was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking following the discovery of approximately 36 pounds of suspected cocaine concealed inside frozen fish.

Onai Nassy, of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, appeared at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court #1, where the charge was read to him before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke, who was sitting for Magistrate Wanda Fortune.

Nassy pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleges that he was in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.

Attorney Bernard Da Silva, who represented Nassy, confirmed that he appeared on the defendant’s behalf and made an application for bail.

However, the court refused bail.
Nassy was subsequently remanded to prison until November 15, 2026, for disclosure.

The charge arose from a police operation on September 27 at Richmondville, Providence, East Bank Demerara, where ranks intercepted a motor vehicle driven by Nassy, who was reportedly the sole occupant.

Police searched the vehicle and discovered two bags containing frozen fish in the trunk.

Further examination of the fish allegedly revealed several parcels containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine concealed inside them.

A total of 15 parcels were reportedly recovered from the frozen fish. The suspected cocaine was subsequently weighed and amounted to approximately 36 pounds.

Nassy was arrested on September 27 and later charged in connection with the alleged discovery.

The matter remains before the Diamond Magistrates’ Courts.
