Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo says Guyana must remain vigilant in protecting its democracy, warning that the country’s hard-won democratic freedoms should never be taken for granted.
Jagdeo made the statement on Monday, as Guyana marked 34 years since the restoration of democracy following the October 5, 1992 elections.
He said those elections ended 28 years of PNC rule and paved the way for stronger democratic institutions, including an independent judiciary, Parliament and a free press.
Jagdeo also pointed to the controversy surrounding the 2020 General and Regional Elections, accusing the APNU+AFC of attempting to overturn the will of voters.
Looking ahead, the Vice President said the PPP/C will continue defending democratic freedoms while pushing development across every region.
He said government will prioritise jobs, housing, education and healthcare, while maintaining fiscal discipline, transparency and the fight against corruption.
