76-year-old remanded for murder of six-year-old Parika boy

A 76-year-old Chinese national has been remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of six-year-old Zi Feng Cao, who was killed at Parika, East Bank Essequibo.

Quan Sheng Li, a cook, appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, where the murder charge was read to him.

He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. The matter is scheduled to return to court on November 5, 2026.

Police informed the court that investigations remain incomplete, with a post-mortem examination, additional statements and other submissions still outstanding.

Cao, a student of Precious Lamb Primary School, was fatally attacked at his family’s restaurant, Kenny’s Ocean Restaurant, at Johnson Street, Parika.

Li was arrested shortly after the child was killed.

Reports indicate that the elderly man had gone to the restaurant seeking money he claimed was owed to him following an investment in the business. A dispute subsequently developed between him and the child’s parents.

Li reportedly confessed to investigators following his arrest and later led ranks to the location where he said the weapon used in the attack had been discarded. Police subsequently recovered the weapon.

The child had reportedly returned home from school shortly before he was attacked.
