REGION ONE GETS FIRST SPECIAL EDUCATION SCHOOL

Families in Mabaruma now have access to specialised education for children with disabilities right in their own community.
The Ministry of Education has opened Region One’s first Special Education Needs and Disabilities, or SEND, school in Mabaruma.
The facility can accommodate 30 learners and is staffed by four specially trained teachers. Fifteen students are already enrolled.
The school means families will no longer have to leave the region to seek specialised educational support for their children.
And more facilities are coming.
Similar SEND schools are planned for Moruca and Matarkai, while bids have already been invited for facilities at Moruca and Port Kaituma, estimated at $37.4 million each.
The expansion comes as Guyana now has 57 SEND spaces nationwide up from just 13 in 2020, as the government pushes to make specialised education available closer to home.12:58
