Government Member of Parliament Suresh Singh has challenged Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed’s claims that children in Foulis, East Coast Demerara, are forced to travel long distances to access schooling, pointing to a nursery school commissioned in the community in August 2025.
Singh was responding to a video posted by Mohamed on Monday, October 5, 2026, in which concerns were raised about the distance children must travel to attend school.
The government MP described the narrative as false, noting that a nursery school is located in the vicinity of Eleventh and Twelfth Streets, Foulis.
The $34 million facility was commissioned in August 2025 by then Minister of Education Priya Manickchand. It has the capacity to accommodate 40 pupils from Foulis and neighbouring Paradise.
According to Singh, the project stemmed from community consultations he conducted in 2023, following which he submitted a formal request on behalf of residents for the construction of a nursery school.
Funding was subsequently allocated in the 2024 National Budget, allowing construction to begin that year.
Singh recalled visiting the construction site on February 10, 2024, alongside a representative of the Region Four Regional Democratic Council and community leaders. He said he also made several visits during construction to monitor the project’s progress.
The facility was built with classrooms, play areas and other amenities to support early childhood education.
Singh maintained that the existence of the school challenges the impression that Foulis lacks access to nursery education.
However, the specific circumstances of the families referenced in Mohamed’s video have not been independently established, and it remains unclear whether the facility addresses all of the concerns raised about access to schooling in the community.
