A 22-year-old Linden farmer has been remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of his 28-year-old brother, Romel Toney, following a confrontation at their worksite in Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
Calvin Toney appeared before Magistrate Taneisha Saygon at the Linden Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 14, where the murder charge was read to him.
He is expected to return to court on November 5.
The incident occurred on October 10 at Millie’s Hideout, where the brothers were reportedly working together on a land-clearing project.
Reports indicate that the siblings had spent Saturday afternoon drinking alcoholic beverages at a nearby shop before returning to their worksite.
Romel’s girlfriend was reportedly accompanying them when an argument developed between the brothers.
It was alleged that the older brother began making advances towards his girlfriend, prompting Calvin to intervene. A confrontation subsequently erupted between the siblings.
During the altercation, Romel allegedly armed himself with a knife, while Calvin reportedly picked up a cutlass and dealt his older brother a chop to the neck.
Romel was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Calvin was arrested shortly after the incident. Police have since recovered the alleged murder weapon and taken statements from eyewitnesses as investigations continue.
Calvin remains in prison pending his next court appearance on November 5.
