Some 260 road shoulder improvement projects have been identified for Georgetown under a national programme aimed at protecting roads, improving drainage and enhancing the appearance of communities.

Head of the Ministry of Public Works’ Miscellaneous Roads Programme, Kevin Tucker, said more than 2,000 such projects have been identified countrywide.

The works involve clearing and excavating selected road shoulders, then filling them with compacted granular material to provide firmer, more even surfaces. The improvements are also intended to help water drain away from roads and reduce pooling.

“The road shoulder is part of the road. It forms part of the road embankment, and it’s one of the key features of the road,” Tucker explained.

Meanwhile, Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill said approximately 50 contractors are already working between Houston and Cummings Lodge.

During a public address on Thursday, Edghill stressed that contractors must inform residents before starting work in their communities. He said flyers could explain the planned improvements and provide contact details for persons seeking clarification.

The minister clarified that this notification does not require contractors to seek permission from individual residents to execute government works on public road reserves. However, he said the ministry remains willing to consult communities and make adjustments where necessary.

Road shoulder improvements are also underway or planned in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six.
