Police are investigating a robbery and murder committed early Wednesday morning against 70-year-old Deonarine, a pensioner residing at Lusignan Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred around 03:30 hrs and involved two male suspects dressed entirely in black, with ski masks concealing their identities.

Deonarine lived in a one-storey wooden house with his reputed wife, a 69-year-old pensioner. She reported to the police that she had awakened around 1:30 hrs and proceeded to the kitchen to clean and cook.

Afterward, she went to the washroom and heard suspicious noises. When she investigated, she was confronted by the two intruders. One suspect reportedly choked her while the other tied her hands and feet and left her restrained in the washroom.

Shortly after, she heard Deonarine calling for her, followed by a commotion that soon stopped. Upon freeing herself, she discovered Deonarine lying motionless on his back in the hallway. She immediately alerted her brother, who contacted the police.

A subsequent inspection revealed that $800,000 in cash – $500,000 from under a bed and $300,000 from a bag in the bedroom – had been stolen.

Although no visible injuries were found on Deonarine’s body, police collected DNA swabs from his hands. His body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause of death.
