The Government of Guyana has launched the National Insurance Scheme’s (NIS) One-Off Payment Programme, an initiative designed to support over 25,000 senior citizens who fall short of the minimum contribution requirement for a pension.
The programme was launched by Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and the Public Service, Dr. Ashni Singh, and follows an earlier announcement by President Dr. Irfaan Ali on April 10, 2025.
This initiative targets insured individuals who have made between 500 and 749 contributions but are not receiving NIS pensions, having turned 60 years of age on or before December 31, 2024.
Eligible individuals will receive one-off payments based on their contribution record:
Individuals with 500 to 549 contributions will receive $260,000
Individuals with 550 to 599 contributions will receive $390,000
Individuals with 600 to 699 contributions will receive $520,000
Individuals with 700 to 749 contributions will receive $650,000
The programme was designed to assist individuals who are just below the 750-contribution threshold required to qualify for a pension under the NIS. A total of $10 billion was allocated in Budget 2025 to finance this effort.
Minister Singh urged all eligible citizens to submit their applications promptly. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for senior citizens, recognising their decades of contribution to national development.
