Chairman of the Alliance For Change (AFC) in Region Seven and founder of the Small Miners Association, David Daniels, has officially thrown his support behind President Dr. Irfaan Ali and the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
Daniels said his decision stems from a growing alignment between the government’s approach to small-scale mining and the interests of the miners he represents.
“I think President Ali’s direction is aligned with my direction and our organisation’s direction,” Daniels stated. “More voices need to be heard for small miners at the highest level, and I’m willing to work with the president in that regard.”
Daniels highlighted the transformation in the mining sector under the current administration, pointing to continuous engagement between the Small Miners Association and key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
He praised Minister of Natural Resources Vikram Bharrat for his responsiveness, noting that over the past three years, the government has demonstrated a genuine interest in addressing the challenges faced by small miners.
“This is the right fit,” Daniels affirmed. “President Ali is not only focused on oil and gas, but also on mining, agriculture, and other areas. That broader vision is important to me and the people I represent.”
Reflecting on his political journey, Daniels said he entered politics in 2018 ahead of the Local Government Elections, motivated by a lack of representation in Region Seven and his desire to bring about change.
He credited the AFC for providing him with an entry into public service and expressed gratitude for the opportunity.
However, he acknowledged a divergence in priorities between the AFC and his focus on the mining sector. “Sometimes, in life, our direction changes,” he said.
“I think the AFC’s direction on mining differs from mine, and I believe the president’s vision is more in line with what we need.”
Despite the political shift, Daniels insisted that his loyalty remains with the people.
“I represent the constituency of small miners, and I will continue to do so,” he said.
Over the past week, several opposition members have crossed over to the PPP/C. The last person was Geeta Chandan-Edmond. During Parliament on Monday night, Chandan-Edmond publicly pledged her support and supported a second term for President Dr. Irfaan Ali.
