The Ministry of Health (MOH) is urging the public to remain vigilant and practice all recommended precautions following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) announcement of a new SARS-CoV-2 variant, named NB.1.8.1.
The WHO recently classified NB.1.8.1 as a “variant under monitoring” due to a notable global rise in COVID-19 infections, including within the Caribbean region.
According to the MOH, symptoms associated with NB.1.8.1 may vary among individuals. Common symptoms reported so far include cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, diarrhoea, and a less frequent loss of taste or smell.
In response to this emerging variant, the Ministry advises the public to consistently practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing. Individuals exposed to COVID-19 or those experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus should seek immediate medical attention and testing.
“The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with regional and international health authorities,” the Ministry noted. The MOH has committed to providing regular updates as new information becomes available.
