A Chinese national, Siyuan Chen, lost his life in a workplace accident at Guyana Manganese Incorporated (GMI) in Matthew’s Ridge, Region One, on Thursday.

Sheriff News Network was informed that the incident occurred at about 13:45 hours while Chen, an electrician at the facility, was monitoring the conveyor belt system in the wash plant.

Preliminary investigations indicate that he became entangled in the machinery, resulting in the loss of his right arm and subsequently leading to his death.

The Ministry of Labour, in a statement, said that Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) officer Chavez Daniels is spearheading a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has also assigned Environmental Officer Sergio Phillander to support the probe.

The investigation will focus on identifying the root causes of the incident and formulating safety recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton expressed deep concern over the tragedy and extended condolences to the family, co-workers, and friends of Chen. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving safety standards in workplaces across Guyana.
