A 25-year-old security officer was granted $100,000 bail on Friday after being charged with grievous bodily harm allegedly committed against his partner, in what police describe as a troubling history of abusive and controlling behaviour.

Kevon French, of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD), appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding 35-year-old caterer Althea Morris on May 29, 2025, at Thomas Lands, Georgetown.

Originally charged indictably, French was later allowed to plead not guilty after the matter was moved to summary disposal with Morris’s consent.

He attempted to offer an explanation during his court appearance but was prevented from doing so by the magistrate.

Investigators told the court that Morris was assaulted after refusing to wait for French to accompany her to a wake. After not showing up for hours, French allegedly followed Morris without her knowledge.

He later confronted her, accused her of disobedience, and allegedly slammed her head into her vehicle, breaking her nose and causing multiple injuries.

Morris remains hospitalised after undergoing emergency surgery and continues to suffer from trauma and nasal bleeding. The prosecution objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the injuries, Morris’s ongoing hospitalisation, and her stated fear for her life.

The investigating officer testified that Morris had previously reported controlling behaviour, including demands from French to send constant updates and photos of her whereabouts.

Although French had been previously released on station bail, Magistrate Singh granted bail again, despite prosecution concerns, but imposed strict conditions: French must stay at least 100 yards away from Morris and must not contact her in any form.

Any breach, the magistrate warned, would result in immediate remand. The case has been adjourned to July 4, 2025. Investigations continue.
