As the country grapples with an increase in dengue cases, authorities in Region Two are stepping up measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

During the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) statutory meeting, Regional Executive Officer (REO) Susanah Saywack reported that the Environmental Health Department has been actively working in coastal communities to combat the outbreak.

Their efforts, she noted, include fogging, indoor spraying, and the use of larvicide to kill mosquito larvae.

Though no official number of cases was made public in the region, Saywack urged residents not to let their guard down.

“We are taking steps, but we need residents to work with us,” she said, encouraging the residents to remove potential mosquito breeding sites.

Simple actions such as clearing drains and trenches, disposing of garbage properly, and covering or discarding containers that collect water can go a long way, she added.

“These small efforts make a big difference when it comes to stopping the spread of dengue.”

Meanwhile, Regional Health Officer Dr. Ranjeev Singh echoed the call for cooperation. He asked residents to take personal precautions, including sleeping under mosquito nets, and to seek medical attention at the first sign of illness.

Dr. Singh lamented the importance of early testing and confirmed that both the Suddie Public Hospital and the Oscar Joseph District Hospital in Charity are offering dengue tests.

Meanwhile, residents are also being asked to assist fogging teams by opening their doors during spraying exercises and ensuring food is properly covered to avoid contamination.

“We’re monitoring the outbreak closely,” Dr. Singh said. “Everyone has a role to play. If you feel unwell, don’t wait to get tested.”

The officials are continuing to monitor the situation and are urging residents across the region to stay alert, take preventive action, and support the ongoing fight against dengue.
