The National Cultural Centre in Georgetown will come alive on Sunday with the eighth edition of ‘A Treat for My Mother,’ a musical variety show directed by Simone Dowding.

This annual event, which is carded for 20:00 hours on Sunday, has become a cherished tradition in Guyana, honouring mothers through a rich tapestry of music, dance, and heartfelt tributes.

According to Dowding, this year’s show boasts performances from some of Guyana’s most celebrated artists. Bonny Alves, a veteran musician with over 50 years in the industry, will grace the stage with his timeless melodies.

Charmaine Blackman, known for her dynamic vocal range, will perform her debut song, “Raise Your Hands for Cha-Cha,” live for the first time – a special request by Dowding to revisit this reggae classic. She added that the evening will feature soulful renditions by Sean Bhola, Barbara Lee, Leona Walton, Sharon Cadogan, Ronald Green, and Eion Nelson.

Adding fresh talent to the mix, newcomers Michelle Gobin and Maxwell Hunte from Region Three will make their debut appearances.

Dowding explained that attendees can look forward to a journey through musical eras, with selections from the 1950s to the 1980s. A standout performance, she noted, includes a box guitar duet by Sean Bhola and Antonine Gonsalves, promising a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Adding a jazzy flair, saxophonist Damion Layne will deliver a captivating solo, enriching the evening’s musical diversity.

Dance enthusiasts will be treated to a meaningful Indian classical dance by Kenrick Cheeks, choreographed to songs personally selected by Dowding. A highlight of the evening is the “Best-Dressed Mother in Deep Purple” contest, encouraging attendees to don their finest purple attire.

The winner will receive a pair of golden earrings from L. Seepersaud Maraj and Son’s Limited, while the runner-up will be gifted earrings from Jacobs Jewellery and Pawn Shop. Adding a sweet touch, the coveted Mother’s Night Cake, crafted by Melody Treats, will be awarded to a lucky attendee, be it a mother or, as history has shown, even a father.

In a new segment, the show will honour women who are cancer survivors, inviting them on stage for a brief but powerful acknowledgment of their strength and perseverance.

Dowding emphasises the importance of regular health check-ups, advocating for early detection and awareness.
