A young Georgetown man accused of violently robbing an acquaintance earlier this year, has been released on bail, despite strong objections from prosecutors highlighting his criminal history.

Orin Fraser, 22, also known by the alias “Lilawattie,” was brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday to face a charge of robbery with violence.

The incident in question occurred on April 10 along King Street in central Georgetown.

According to the prosecution, Fraser allegedly attacked and robbed Melvin Marks of a black cellphone valued at $78,000, a black purse worth $5,000, and $15,000 in cash. The total loss amounted to $98,000.

Prosecutors also claimed that Fraser used personal violence against the victim during, or immediately surrounding, the robbery.

During the court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, Fraser confirmed that he is self-employed and resides at Lot 52 Princes and William Streets.

It was further disclosed that he and the complainant knew each other through Facebook.

Prosecutors urged the court to deny bail, citing Fraser’s prior brushes with the law, including previous charges such as assaulting a police officer.

They described him as no stranger to the criminal justice system. Nonetheless, Magistrate McGusty opted to grant Fraser bail in the amount of $80,000.

The matter was adjourned to August 8 for continuation.
