Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, has issued a strong call for the police officer allegedly responsible for the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Keon Fogenay during recent unrest in Linden to be charged with murder.

Fogenay was reportedly making his way home when he was shot and killed amid protests over the earlier police killing of another Linden resident, Ronaldo Peters.

Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, during the virtual press conference on Friday.

While a police sergeant has since been charged and remanded for Peters’ murder, Fogenay’s family continues to await justice.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Hughes condemned the delay in bringing charges in Fogenay’s case, calling it “unacceptable.”

“We repeat our demand that the person responsible for murdering Mr. Fogenay be charged forthwith. The fact that they charged one police officer with the first killing is not enough,” Hughes stated.

He said that video footage and eyewitness statements, including the identification of the officer involved, were handed over to the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Hughes noted he was present when the statement was taken by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).

“The evidence exists and has been provided to the Guyana Police Force. The continued failure to act only deepens public mistrust in the Force,” he said.

Earlier this week, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed that the OPR is handling the investigation into Fogenay’s death in collaboration with the Regional Security System (RSS), and not by the Force’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
