Agriculture Month 2026 was officially launched on Wednesday ahead of the month-long observance, which begins on October 1.
Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, delivered the feature address at the launch, where he highlighted the transformation taking place within Guyana’s agriculture sector.
This year’s activities will be held under the theme “Innovate, Nourish, Grow: Building a Strong and Sustainable Guyana,” which Minister Mustapha said reflects the transformation taking place across Guyana’s agriculture sector and the Government’s continued focus on building a modern, productive and sustainable industry.
During his address, Mustapha said farmers across the country are increasingly embracing science, technology, research, mechanisation, digital agriculture and climate-smart production systems.
He pointed to the growing use of drones, sensors, precision irrigation and digital platforms such as the Farmers Connect app as examples of how technology is becoming increasingly integrated into agricultural production and service delivery.
The Minister also highlighted agriculture’s role in ensuring that Guyanese have access to safe, affordable, nutritious and reliable food supplies, while strengthening the country’s food sovereignty and its contribution to regional food and nutrition security.
According to Mustapha, Guyana’s progress in this area has also received international recognition, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) identifying Guyana as one of only four countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with a prevalence of hunger and undernourishment below 2.5 percent.
Agriculture Month 2026 will feature a range of activities aimed at increasing public engagement with the sector.
Among the scheduled activities are farmers’ markets, the inaugural Farmers’ Conference, the Annual Honey Fest, World Food Day activities and other events showcasing developments within Guyana’s agriculture sector.
Mustapha said the activities will provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, strengthening market linkages and showcasing the work of farmers, fisherfolk, livestock producers, agro-processors and other stakeholders contributing to the sector’s development.
As Agriculture Month gets underway, the observance will focus on the progress made within the sector while highlighting the role of innovation, technology and investment in building a stronger and more sustainable agriculture industry in Guyana.
