A 26-year-old Alness Village mechanic lost his life early Tuesday morning when the car he was driving collided with a lorry on the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne.
Dead is Joshua Crawford, of Lot 21 Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
The crash occurred around 5:11 hours and involved Crawford’s motorcar, PZZ 5030, and motor lorry GAF 3405, driven by 29-year-old Raymond Swamber of Lot 92 ‘B’ Alness Village.
Police said investigations so far indicate that the lorry was travelling east along the northern lane, while Crawford was heading west along the southern lane.
According to Swamber, Crawford’s car suddenly moved north into the path of the lorry, resulting in the vehicles colliding on the northern lane.
The impact left Crawford seriously injured. Public-spirited citizens removed him from the wrecked car while he was unconscious and rushed him to the Port Mourant Public Hospital.
After being examined by a doctor, Crawford was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police said Swamber was subjected to a breathalyzer test, which recorded readings of 16 and 13 micrograms.
Both vehicles were extensively damaged and remained at the scene in a non-drivable condition.
As part of the investigation, police canvassed the area for surveillance footage and located a CCTV camera. The footage was viewed but had not yet been copied.
A post-mortem examination is expected to assist in determining the exact cause of Crawford’s death, while police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are continuing.
