An armed robbery at Kent Snackette/Cheese Please Stand at Cornhill Street in Georgetown ended swiftly Monday night when police apprehended the suspect just minutes after the crime was committed.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the robbery occurred at about 23:15 hours. According to the Police, Dwayne John, 40, of Lot 56 Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, entered the snackette armed with a gun, punched the sales clerk, identified as Avinesh Singh, in the face, pointed the weapon at him, and grabbed a small box containing the cash before fleeing the scene.

Singh and two other men gave chase, during which the suspect discharged several rounds at his pursuers as he escaped into Leopold Street.

Police officers on mobile patrol were quickly alerted to the incident. Acting on the information received, the ranks searched Leopold Street and apprehended the suspect, who was found with a wound to his chest.

During questioning, John claimed he had thrown the firearm and the stolen cash into a drain while running away. He led officers to the area, but after searching, police were unable to locate either the weapon or the cash.

The suspect is in police custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
