Twenty-five-year-old Karran Sukhan, who is accused of abusing his partner Joanna, has been arrested, according to Region Six Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus.
Seeking urgent help, Joanna of Region Six took to Facebook on Thursday, claiming she had been trapped in an abusive and violent relationship for the past six years.
Joanna stated that she began a relationship with Sukhan, the owner of Red Scorpion Car Rental of No. 2 Village, Region Six, in October 2018. By March 2019, she said the abuse began, starting with slaps and escalating to brutal, life-threatening violence.
“He kicked me in the stomach, stomped on my head, and beat me repeatedly. Over the years, the violence only worsened,” she recounted.
Joanna said that, out of fear for her life, she kept the abuse hidden from her family but recently broke her silence. She has since left the home she shared with Sukhan and taken her two children with her.
She described enduring a range of abuse:
“One time, I fell asleep and didn’t hear him calling my phone. I answered on the second call and opened the door as soon as I could. He kicked me in the stomach, causing me to fall into the house and injure myself. A few months after I gave birth, he made me roll on hot concrete. He slapped me while I was holding our one-month-old baby, causing the child to hit his head. He forced me to kneel with my hands in the air while he sat with his feet on my shoulders, pulling my hair and punching me. He hit me with a hose and pelted me with anything nearby—plates, cups, phones, shoes—if anything displeased him. If there was dust in his water or a speck of eggshell in his food, I was beaten. He beat me for not finishing dinner before he got home, for asking him to stop cheating, or simply for not wanting to have sex. He forced sex on me daily, and if I resisted, I was physically and verbally assaulted. He once tied a wire around my neck, fastened it to a grill, and tried to pull me off a bed, threatening to kill me while I was pregnant. Sometimes, he beat me while I held our newborn.”
Joanna also claimed that Sukhan’s grandmother witnessed the abuse on multiple occasions. When she tried to intervene, Sukhan reportedly responded, “She’s my wife. I can do whatever I want to her,” which only made things worse.
Last Friday, after Joanna told Sukhan she wanted to end the relationship, he allegedly attacked her again.
“This time with a knife and a cutlass. My body is now covered in scars and bruises. He even pulled a knife on our two-year-old son and threatened to poison and kill all of us,” she stated.
According to Joanna, she was isolated, constantly threatened, and forced to run Sukhan’s business while being treated like “nothing.” She said Sukhan refused to help care for the children.
“He left me home alone while he drank and cheated, then came home to torment me further,” Joanna disclosed.
