A 25-year-old businessman from Corentyne, Berbice, who was accused of abusing his partner in a widely publicised case, has been charged with multiple offences and remanded to prison.
The defendant Karran Sukhan was charged with assault causing bodily harm, threatening language, and threatening behaviour.
The charges stem from an incident on June 6, 2025, at Lot 143, Number 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice, involving his 20-year-old partner, Jonna Ramator, a housewife.
The charges were laid under Section 141(a) and Section 30(a) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offenses) Act, Chapter 8:02.
Sukhan appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on June 13, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was remanded to prison until June 23, 2025.
The case attracted public attention after the victim, Ramator, took to Facebook last week, detailing a harrowing account of six years of abuse at the hands of Sukhan, the owner of Red Scorpion Car Rental of No. 2 Village, Region Six.
She claimed that the abuse began shortly after their relationship started in October 2018, escalating from slaps to life-threatening violence. She described enduring frequent physical assaults, threats, and emotional torment, including being forced to kneel with her hands in the air while being struck, and being beaten for minor issues such as not finishing dinner or questioning Sukhan about his infidelity.
Jonna also recounted instances where she was assaulted while holding their infant. She said that she was forced to run Sukhan’s business under constant threats, all while being isolated from her family. She described the most recent attack, which allegedly involved a knife and a cutlass, and said that her two-year-old son was also threatened.
The matter is set for report and further proceedings on June 23 at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, as police investigations continue.
