Berbice Senior Counsel Murseline Bacchus was laid to rest on Sunday, with relatives, friends, lawyers, and judges gathering at the Berbice High Court for a viewing and tribute service.
A member of the Berbice Bar Association, attorney Mirza Sahadat, highlighted Bacchus’s extensive legal knowledge and approachability, particularly in maritime law.
“He was a walking library […] citing cases and the ratio decidendi off his head. He had a wealth of knowledge which he was always willing to share with any lawyer who asked,” Sahadat said.
President of the Guyana Bar Association, Kamal Ramkarran, praised Bacchus’s passion for criminal law and jury trials.
“Other than his family, one of Mr. Bacchus’s abiding loves was criminal law and jury trials. He loved being in the Assizes and believed other lawyers should share that passion,” Ramkarran revealed.
Justice Damone Younge commended Bacchus’s professionalism, saying he would be deeply missed.
His wife, Pamela Bacchus, spoke of his greatness as a husband and mentor, while his children celebrated the values he instilled in them.
“Muchu was not only a remarkable husband, but he was also a generous teacher and a wise mentor to me and so many others. He was also an incredible father,” she noted.
Another service was held at Bacchus’s home in Sheet Anchor, Canje, before his burial at Stanleytown Cemetery.
Bacchus, a legal luminary who passed away on June 24 after a brief illness, dedicated five decades to the legal profession and earned the title of Senior Counsel in 2020.
He was a prominent figure in Berbice and a proud graduate of the University of the West Indies and the Hugh Wooding Law School.
