A 59-year-old snow cone vendor was remanded to prison on Tuesday after being charged with trafficking 262 grams of cannabis.

Claud Cole of Lot 17 Belladrum Village, West Coast Berbice, appeared at the Fort Wellington Magistrates Court before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution objected to bail, and Magistrate Mohabir granted the request, remanding Cole to prison.

Cole will make his next court appearance on June 27. The matter was transferred to the Weldaad Magistrates Court for report.

According to information gathered, on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at approximately 08:55 hours, ranks were performing roadblock duties on the Weldaad Public Road, West Coast Berbice, when they stopped and searched minibus BSS 843. At that time, Cole was seated in the rear passenger seat, holding a black plastic bag.

One of the ranks then asked Cole to search the black plastic bag, and he agreed. Upon opening the bag in the presence of the officer and Cole, leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis were discovered.

Cole was immediately informed of the offence, arrested, and cautioned. He was later escorted to Weldaad Police Station, where the suspected narcotic was opened, weighed, and packaged in his presence. The cannabis amounted to 262 grams of cannabis.

Samples were taken, and the suspected narcotic was lodged with the station sergeant at the Weldaad Police Station.
