Berbice vendor’s house destroyed by fire, arson suspected
A fire, believed to be arson, completely destroyed the house of Berbice vendor Gavin Cummings, 60, of Lot 35, Liverpool Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
In an interview with reporters, Cummings, who lives alone, stated that he was selling fruits and vegetables at the Port Mourant market when he received a call around 5:00 a.m. informing him that his house was engulfed in flames.
After returning, he found his three-bedroom wooden house, which had been in the family for 50 years, fully furnished and reduced to ash.
The father of four is currently staying with a friend. He suspects his neighbour, Debra Leitch, set the fire after he intervened in a fight she had weeks earlier.
Following the court proceedings related to the incident, Leitch threatened to burn down his house on Friday.
On Monday, October 13th, Debra was sentenced to one month of imprisonment for assault causing actual bodily harm.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald confirmed the fire was intentionally set.
Cummings believes Leitch is responsible. He expressed the need for Leitch to face the consequences for her actions.
