Boat Collision Claims Life of Pensioner
Police in Regional Division #2 have launched an investigation into a fatal river mishap that occurred on Monday, February 9, 2026, at approximately 15:30 hrs at Kabakaburi, Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo.
The incident resulted in the death of 71-year-old pensioner Felix Smith of St. Monica Village, Upper Pomeroon River.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a boat operated by a 36-year-old woman of Karawab Village was travelling along the river with two passengers when it reportedly collided with another wooden boat captained by Smith. A female passenger was also aboard Smith’s vessel at the time of the collision.
Following the impact, Smith was found unconscious in his boat. He was rushed to the Karawab Health Centre and later transferred to the Charity Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
Smith’s body has since been taken to the Charity Cottage Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The operator of the other boat is currently in police custody and is assisting investigators. Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
