The body of 14-year-old Daveanand Balram, who was feared drowned after going swimming with friends in the Corentyne River, was recovered by relatives on Wednesday morning in the Scottsburg, Corentyne area.
The discovery came just over a day after the teenager disappeared while swimming in the river, triggering an extensive search involving family members, ranks of the Guyana Police Force, and law enforcement officials from neighbouring Suriname.
Speaking with Sheriff News Network Berbice Correspondent, the teen’s mother, 32-year-old Gayatree Rambhajan, confirmed the tragic discovery.
She said relatives organised a search party early Wednesday and located Daveanand’s body before bringing it ashore.
The body was subsequently handed over to the Guyana Police Force, which has since launched further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The teenager’s death has left relatives and residents of the Corentyne community mourning the tragic loss.
