Appearing before Magistrate Tanisha Saigon at the Linden Magistrates’ Court on Monday was 29-year-old Jamal Cumberbatch, also known as “Brains” from Half Mile, Wismar, Linden.
He was remanded to prison over the murder of his former friend, Keron McDonald, 27, of Block 22, Wismar, Linden.
Cumberbatch, of Half Mile, Wismar, Linden, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge and is expected to return to court on September 23.
McDonald, a Bosai Minerals Group Guyana employee, was fatally shot last week during an altercation in the Prosville area of Wismar.
The two men were reportedly once close friends, but their relationship had deteriorated over an alleged dispute involving the mother of McDonald’s two children.
Relatives said tensions escalated after McDonald allegedly accused Cumberbatch of being involved in a relationship with the woman.
The dispute reportedly intensified on the morning of August 19 following a social media post involving Cumberbatch’s son.
The men allegedly first confronted each other at McDonald’s home before leaving separately.
They later encountered each other again, where the disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical fight.
Cumberbatch is alleged to have returned to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm and shot McDonald in the chest.
McDonald was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex but was pronounced dead.
Police subsequently arrested Cumberbatch and recovered a spent 9mm shell from the scene.
Police said no firearm has been recovered at this stage.
