Larry Adams, a 26-year-old auto parts dealer, was remanded to prison recently after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer a charge of illegal possession of a firearm.

The charge stems from a pistol allegedly discovered hidden behind an air conditioning vent in a vehicle Adams had borrowed from his father.

During the court hearing, the prosecution outlined that police intercepted Adams on King Street, Georgetown, after reportedly detecting a marijuana scent coming from the car.

When instructed to exit the vehicle, Adams allegedly locked the doors and drove away, leading to a chase through Georgetown.

He was eventually stopped a second time, but again refused to cooperate. Police said they ultimately gained entry to the car and uncovered the firearm behind the glove compartment.

The investigating officer stated that body camera footage captured the discovery, although it had not yet been presented in court.

Further complicating the matter, the vehicle was reportedly left at the scene with wheel ramps in place, but was discovered missing the following morning.

It was later located at Princess and Smyth Streets, Georgetown, allegedly in the hands of individuals known to Adams.

Defence attorney Stacy Goodings argued that Adams had no direct control over the firearm, which she said required disassembly of the car’s air conditioning system to access.

She added that the vehicle is routinely used by others and provided evidence of a rental agreement. Goodings also highlighted that Adams was recently in the interior and lacked the time or motive to alter the vehicle.

Goodings emphasised that no fingerprints were recovered and police did not wear gloves during the search.

She drew on precedent to challenge the notion of constructive possession, stressing that Adams has strong community ties and no passport.

Nevertheless, the magistrate denied bail, stating that she would review the surveillance and body camera footage at the next hearing, set for June 27, 2025.
