The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has removed more than 1,600 kilograms of narcotics from circulation during the first half of 2026, with cocaine and marijuana accounting for the bulk of the seizures.
Addressing the media on Friday, CANU Head James Singh revealed that officers seized over 250 kilograms of cocaine and in excess of 1,400 kilograms of marijuana between January and June this year.
He said the figures reflect the agency’s ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking operations across the country.
Singh explained that many of the cocaine busts involved shipments that were passing through Guyana on their way to overseas markets. He noted that investigators have intercepted drugs before they were loaded onto vessels and have also uncovered cases where narcotics entered Guyana from neighbouring countries for onward shipment.
The CANU Head further highlighted the importance of intelligence sharing and cooperation with overseas law enforcement agencies, noting that joint investigations have contributed to several major drug busts.
Alongside its anti-trafficking operations, CANU has been strengthening its public awareness programme. The agency has produced an educational book for schools on the dangers of drug use and is working with the Guyana Police Force and community stakeholders to target communities affected by the illegal drug trade while encouraging residents to provide information.
