Prison officers on duty at the Lusignan prison this morning averted an attempt to smuggle contraband into the prison.

Timothy McGarrell of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, was arrested after he was found with a quantity of cannabis while at the prison on the East Coast of Demerara.

Prison officers discovered the hidden cannabis under the soles of his slippers during a thorough search upon arrival at the prison checkpoint.

Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, has commented the prison officers for their level of vigilance and warned persons that they must not traffic contraband into the prison because they will be caught.

The man was arrested and handed over to the police where he would be charged criminally for his conduct.

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) is urging members of the public to avoid transporting items on behalf of others after an 18-year-old woman was caught attempting to take contraband into the New Amsterdam Prison.

The incident was highlighted during the first 2026 episode of the GPS’ monthly television programme Prisons in Focus, where senior officials warned that persons who knowingly or unknowingly carry illegal items into correctional facilities could face serious consequences.

According to the Service, the young woman, a resident of Rose Hall, Corentyne, Berbice, was arrested after officers discovered three packs of cannabis concealed in her handbag. The drugs were reportedly hidden inside two men’s deodorant containers and wrapped in a black plastic bag. The items were detected during routine searches conducted by prison officers.

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot said the case serves as a reminder that smuggling contraband into prisons is a criminal offence that puts inmates, officers and the wider society at risk. He cautioned that persons who assist in such acts expose themselves to legal trouble.

Assistant Director of Prisons Olivia Cox said the Service has seen significant commentary online about the incident and noted that many individuals claim they were unaware of what they were carrying. She stressed that this is a common explanation given by persons caught at prison facilities.

“Just like your relatives will tell you when you’re going to the airport, do not hold anything, do not take anything from anyone,” Cox said.

She explained that in several cases, persons say they were asked by acquaintances to deliver packages to inmates, believing they were merely helping. However, once searches are conducted, prohibited items are often uncovered and those delivering them are held responsible.

“You’re only going to put yourself behind bars with those persons. You’re no good being behind bars with them,” Cox warned.

Assistant Superintendent of Prisons and Head of Training Abeid Decunta also cautioned against enabling illegal behaviour within correctional facilities.

“Do not, under any circumstances, empower those changes, the negative changes,” he said, noting that the Service does not want members of the public to support unlawful habits among inmates.

Decunta added that strict security measures remain in place at all prison locations and visitors must pass through several screening layers. He emphasised that illegal items will be detected.

The GPS is advising citizens not to accept packages from third parties for delivery to prisons and to ensure they know the contents of any items they carry into correctional facilities.

A source familiar with the ongoing investigation into the alleged illegal cambio operated by Azruddin Mohamed has revealed that investigators are in possession of approximately 20 additional video recordings documenting transactions carried out at the Lombard Street location.

According to the source, the footage was obtained during a month-long undercover operation conducted by a specialized unit. The operation, the source explained, was deliberately kept confidential from certain key officials who are believed to have been compromised.

“Many of them were kept in the dark because they usually leak information of that nature to Azruddin,” the source stated.

It was during this covert exercise that undercover operatives reportedly conducted foreign exchange transactions at the location, with each exchange recorded as part of the evidence-gathering process. The recordings are said to clearly document the changing of foreign currency at the premises during the period the cambio was allegedly ordered closed.

The source further indicated that several individuals are expected to face prosecution based on the video evidence and the anticipated testimony of the undercover operatives who participated in the transactions.

Investigations remain ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide further updates as the matter progresses.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was walking along a street in the area when she was approached by two males, one armed with what appeared to be a handgun and the other armed with a knife. Further to the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU)-led operation conducted yesterday, and in continuation of the official statement previously issued, SOCU provides the following update.

The cambio establishment associated with the Mohamed’s had been formally ordered closed pursuant to sanctions imposed by the United States Government and corresponding local regulatory and enforcement actions. Despite this directive, the establishment continued conducting foreign exchange transactions in breach of the closure order.

Prior and following the initial release of video evidence showing ongoing activity at the location, Azrudin Mohamed publicly denied that the cambio was operational.

In the interest of transparency and to clarify the facts, SOCU released additional video footage captured minutes before the operation commenced. The footage clearly shows and audibly records the exchange of local and foreign currency, confirming that business transactions were actively taking place.

Investigations remain ongoing. SOCU reaffirms its commitment to impartial law enforcement and to safeguarding the integrity of Guyana’s financial and regulatory systems. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.

Two men accused of being involved in the trafficking of more than eight kilogrammes of cocaine were on Tuesday remanded to prison.

This was following their appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

They are being represented by attorneys Eden Corbin and Dexter Todd. The prosecution is being conducted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU).

The court was told that CANU officers were conducting an intelligence-driven operation in the Kitty and Sheriff Street area when they allegedly witnessed a transaction between the two accused men.

One of the men was said to be inside a vehicle at the time. As officers moved in, the vehicle reportedly drove away, prompting a pursuit.

During the chase, a package was allegedly discarded from the car.

The item was recovered by ranks and later identified as containing suspected cocaine.

The vehicle was eventually brought to a stop after crashing, and the driver was apprehended while attempting to flee through a nearby trench.

An injury was noted to his forehead at the time of his arrest.

Both accused were taken into custody and later charged in connection with the narcotics offence.

Magistrate McGusty adjourned the matter to February 12 so that video footage related to the incident can be reviewed by the court.

Bail was denied, and the men were remanded to prison until their next court appearance.

Dexter Philadelphia, called “Dexter Clarke”, and Rayle, 51, a contractor of Number 51 Village, Corentyne Berbice, were on Tuesday committed to stand trial for the rape of a 12-year-old girl.

Dexter, who appeared at the Berbice High Court before Justice Deborah Kumar, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court heard that on August 6th, 2016, while in Region Six, Dexter engaged in sexual penetration with a 12-year-old child.

State Prosecutor Marisa Edwards indicated she will call seven witnesses, including three police officers, one doctor, and three others, to testify in the case.

Subsequently, a 12-member jury was empanelled, paving the way for the commencement of the trial on February 9th, 2026.

The jury is expected to consider the evidence and decide whether or not the accused is guilty or not guilty.

Dexter is being represented by Attorney-at-law Kevin Morgan from the Guyana Legal Aid Clinic.

Jaswant Murilal, 27, of First Street, Martyr’s Ville, Mon Repos, was charged with the offence of Dangerous Driving, contrary to Section 36(1) of the Road and Motor Vehicles Act, Chapter 51.

The charge followed after a video circulated on social media showing Murilal driving at an alleged high rate of speed along the Ogle/Eccles Highway. The footage showed the vehicle subsequently losing control, crossing the median and entering the lane of oncoming traffic, narrowly avoiding collisions with other motor vehicles.

On Wednesday January 28, 2026, Murilal appeared at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court before His Worship Dylon Bess, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded guilty and was fined fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) Guyana currency or twelve (12) months’ imprisonment.
