CH&PA orders immediate shutdown of unauthorised Bel Air supermarket
The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) has issued a Contravention Notice ordering the immediate closure of an unauthorised supermarket operating at Lot 22, Area “L”, Bel Air Village, Plantation Bel Air, Georgetown.
In a statement today, the authority said the action was taken under Section 22 of the Town and Country Planning Act, Chapter 20:01, after it was found that the supermarket was established and operating without the required planning permission.
According to CH&PA, the non-residential activity was commenced in breach of national planning regulations and contrary to the provisions of the Town and Country Planning Act.
The authority noted that Mr. Kamoul Ramdial is aware of the established process for applying for planning permission for non-residential developments through the Single Window portal. While an application was submitted on October 21, 2025, CH&PA said it failed document validation and was therefore not approved.
CH&PA has reiterated that all commercial, industrial, and other non-residential developments must receive formal planning approval before construction or operations begin. This, the authority said, is necessary to ensure orderly development and to protect surrounding communities.
The authority also reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law, while indicating its willingness to work with businesses and developers who follow due process and comply with the country’s planning requirements.
