In the early hours of Wednesday, law enforcement officers conducted an anti-crime mobile patrol at Riverview, Ruimveldt, in Georgetown and arrested a police constable found in possession of an unlicenced firearm.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), at approximately 1:30 hours, officers received information from residents reporting a white Premio motorcar with a trade plate parked on a street in Riverview, where a male occupant was allegedly armed.

Upon arrival, the police identified the man as 26-year-old Areyon Grannum, a police constable attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU).

When questioned, Grannum stated he was on sick leave and was “liming” in the vehicle, which he claimed to have recently purchased from an auto dealer.

A search of the vehicle revealed a .32 Taurus pistol concealed within the driver’s side door panel, along with one magazine loaded with 11 live rounds.

Grannum admitted he did not have a licence to carry the firearm but claimed it was for his protection. He was subsequently arrested, cautioned, and taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station along with his vehicle. The firearm and ammunition were marked, sealed, and lodged as evidence. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
