“Digital Kayana” to transform infrastructure mapping in Guyana – Pres. Ali
The government has officially rolled out “Digital Kayana,” a state-of-the-art geographic information system (GIS) platform designed to revolutionise how Guyana maps, manages, and monitors its infrastructure.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali made this announcement during a live Facebook broadcast, noting that the platform will digitise the country’s physical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, drainage systems, and utility services.
The initiative aims to prevent unnecessary damage to existing roadways during utility works and improve overall coordination in planning and development.
“Digital Kayana will introduce an integrated GIS that can create 3D models of national infrastructure in real time,” the President stated. “The days of cutting highways to locate underground pipelines will soon be behind us.”
The tool will cover features such as roads, bridges, underground conduits, utility poles, hydrants, and other key infrastructure elements. According to Dr. Ali, this digital layer will be accessible to both public and private entities, enabling faster emergency responses, smarter planning, and improved utility coordination.
“This is essential if we are to build a modern society,” he added. “It’s not just about reducing risk. It’s about improving the comfort and safety of our citizens while making services more efficient.”
Digital Kayana was developed through public-private collaboration and is expected to serve as the backbone for future smart city technologies in Guyana.
This effort aligns with other ongoing initiatives by the Ali administration aimed at modernising public services and infrastructure management using digital tools.
