Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya in Police Custody Following Fatal Nigg Road Accident

Police are investigating a fatal accident that claimed the life of a 42-year-old pedestrian on Saturday night along Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:55 p.m. and involved motor car PZZ 1906, driven by 79-year-old Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya of Whim Village, Corentyne, and pedestrian Ishwarnauth Bisram of the Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne.

According to initial investigations, the motor car was proceeding east along the northern driving lane of Nigg Public Road when Bisram allegedly attempted to cross the roadway from south to north.

Police said the pedestrian reportedly walked into the path of the approaching vehicle. The driver applied his brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision, but the front portion of the car struck Bisram.

Bisram sustained injuries to his body and was transported to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

His body has since been taken to Ramoo’s Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

A breathalyser test administered to Ramayya recorded 11 micrograms, which is below the prescribed legal limit.

Police also observed CCTV cameras in the vicinity and said the footage will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.
