Police in Berbice have detained a 41-year-old man after an unlicensed firearm was discovered near a motor vehicle he claimed to be operating.
The discovery was made around 19:00 hrs on Tuesday after police ranks from Central Police Station acted on intelligence and proceeded to Stanleytown, New Amsterdam.
As the patrol approached the location, an unidentified male reportedly sped away on a dark-coloured motorcycle without a registration plate. He had been seen next to a silver-grey motor car bearing registration number PXX 1524.
Officers then made contact with Michael Embrack, also known as ‘Duckman’, of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, who was in the yard in front of the vehicle. Embrack informed the officers that he was the driver of the vehicle.
A thorough search of the house, yard, and car yielded no illegal items. However, during a further sweep of the immediate surroundings, ranks discovered a 9mm pistol located approximately five feet from the vehicle, next to an electrical pole.
Embrack was subsequently arrested and taken to the Central Police Station, where he remains in custody assisting with the investigation.
Police confirmed that the firearm was dusted for latent fingerprints, but none were found. The weapon was marked, sealed, and lodged with the Station Sergeant for safekeeping.
