Police are investigating an alleged murder following a violent early-morning attack at Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice, which claimed the life of a 61-year-old businessman.
The incident occurred at about 05:00 hrs on Monday, December 22, 2025, and resulted in the death of Chen Yongping and injuries to a 32-year-old businessman of the same address.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two men had just returned home after travelling earlier that morning when they were confronted by two identifiable males armed with knives. The suspects allegedly robbed the victims of a quantity of Guyana currency and mobile phones

During the encounter, both men were stabbed and sustained multiple injuries. They were rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Chen Yongping later succumbed to his injuries while receiving care, while the injured man was treated and subsequently discharged.
The body of the deceased is currently at a funeral parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects as investigations into the incident continue.
