A family of nine is now homeless after a fire, suspected to be caused by electrical issues, destroyed their house in Crabwood Creek, Corentyne Berbice, on Thursday morning.

In an interview with reporters, Shenieza Yussuf, who resides at Lot 7B Grant 1804 Crabwood Creek, explained that around 11:30 AM, she and her seven children, aged 15, 14, 8, 7, 5, 3, and 2, were on the lower floor of their three-bedroom wooden and concrete house when the fire broke out.

“I was in the hammock when one of my sons come and tell me that something smelling burn burn,” she said.

Upon investigating, they discovered that the fire started in one of the bedrooms, where the fuse box is located.

“I just tell my kids them to run because the fire started to spread all over,” she recalled.

Shenieza mentioned that her husband was not at home at the time of the fire.

“I didn’t get to save nothing, just couple papers that’s all ,” she disclosed.

Berbice Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald confirmed that the fire was indeed electrical in nature.
