The family of 23-year-old Chittesh Sukhai, also known as “Rohan” and “Marsho,” had reportedly raised concerns about threats against him with police weeks before he was fatally chopped at Friendship Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Sukhai was attacked at about 23:40 hours on September 28, reportedly by four men armed with cutlasses following an earlier dispute involving a female relative.
His sister, Roshanie Sudhu, told reporters that the family went to the police station around August 3 or 4 to report alleged threats and an incident involving a cutlass. She claimed, however, that the family received no further update following the report.
According to Sudhu, the situation stemmed from an incident at a supermarket, where her brother allegedly slapped a female relative after she slapped him. She said the matter later escalated, with threats allegedly being made against Sukhai.
Sudhu said she learnt of the attack after receiving a call from her mother, who told her to come and see her brother. While on her way, she received another call informing her that Sukhai had been severely chopped.
She later went to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where Sukhai succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that Sukhai was involved in an argument with a female relative before several men allegedly arrived armed with cutlasses and chopped him multiple times.
Sukhai reportedly fled the scene but collapsed in a nearby yard.
Two cutlasses suspected to have been used in the attack were subsequently recovered in the vicinity.
Police have since arrested two men, aged 27 and 23, from Friendship and Limlair villages, respectively. Both remain in custody as investigations continue.
Sukhai’s body was taken to Ramoo’s Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
