Fisherman dies after alleged altercation with 15-year-old in Corriverton

A 55-year-old fisherman died on Wednesday night after he was reportedly involved in an altercation with a 15-year-old boy outside a supermarket at Corriverton, Corentyne.


Dead is Asmat Mohamed Hussain, of Lot 23 Dukestown, Corriverton, Berbice. According to Hussain’s sister, Bibi Hussain, the incident occurred at about 21:00hrs while her brother was in the company of relatives outside One Go Supermarket. Bibi said Hussain later entered the supermarket to purchase beverages. Shortly afterwards, she said, persons began rushing towards the front of the business. When relatives went to investigate, they allegedly found Hussain lying motionless on the ground in a pool of blood.


He was picked up and taken to the Number 75 Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Bibi said relatives observed injuries to Hussain’s head but could not say what led to the alleged confrontation between him and the teenager. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. The 15-year-old was arrested and taken into police custody for questioning.


Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hussain’s death, including what transpired between him and the teenager before he was found injured outside the supermarket.
