Fisherman remanded following Albionstabbing incident

A 28-year-old fisherman was remanded to prison on Wednesday following his appearance in court in connection with the fatal stabbing of another fisherman at Albion, Corentyne.

Videsh Singh of Lot 71 Albion Front appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with manslaughter in the death of 34-year-old Franklyn “Frank” or “Franky” Sauers.

The charge alleged that Singh unlawfully killed Sauers on September 6, 2026, at Albion Front. Singh was not required to enter a plea.

Singh’s attorney, Vinay Punwa, sought bail and presented his client’s account of the events leading to the stabbing.

Punwa told the court that Singh and Sauers had an altercation at a bar, after which Singh returned home. The attorney alleged that Sauers later went to Singh’s premises and attacked him.

According to the defence, Singh, fearing for his life and the safety of his family, picked up a knife during the confrontation, resulting in Sauers being injured.
The prosecution, however, strongly opposed bail.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Meika Crawford told the court that the investigation remains ongoing and police still have to take statements from several witnesses.

She also pointed to the seriousness of the matter, noting that a life had been lost, and argued that Singh could potentially interfere with witnesses or evidence if released.

The prosecutor further disclosed that the post-mortem report on Sauers is still outstanding and that police are seeking legal advice.

After considering the submissions, Magistrate Hardy denied bail and ordered Singh to remain in custody until September 16, when he is expected to return to court.

Sauers was previously reported by police to have been found in the living room of a house at Albion Front with stab wounds to his ribs and neck.

He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Singh was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged.11:24
