Five Friendship Village residents, including a mother and her two sons, have been remanded to prison in connection with the fatal chopping of 23-year-old Chittesh Sukhai.
Sukhai, also known as “Rohan” and “Marsho”, died at the Port Mourant Public Hospital after he was allegedly attacked at Friendship Village, Corentyne, on September 28.
The accused are Zynette Baichu, 47, a housewife; her sons Mohan Narine, 22, a labourer, and Gowcharran Narine, 26, a construction worker; Mahendra Budhram, 26, unemployed; and Kumar Jailall, 19, a labourer. All are from Friendship Village.
They appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on Friday before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy and were charged with murder. Since the charge is indictable, none was required to enter a plea.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Shinel Mathieson informed the court that the post-mortem report and forensic laboratory results are still outstanding. The court was also told that legal advice had already been obtained.
The five were remanded until November 9.
According to police, Sukhai was involved in an argument with a female relative at about 23:40 hours on September 28 when several men allegedly arrived armed with cutlasses.
He was reportedly chopped multiple times before fleeing the area and collapsing in a nearby yard.
Sukhai was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.
Police subsequently recovered two cutlasses in the vicinity, which are suspected to have been used in the incident.
The five accused were later arrested and charged.
