Colwyn King, a former president of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), was on Thursday unanimously found guilty by a 12-member jury for the rape of a child under the age of 16.

The conviction stems from two incidents that took place in April 2021, during which King raped the child on separate occasions, once at night and again in the afternoon, when the child was left alone and vulnerable. The child was six years old at the time.

The trial was heard at the High Court in Georgetown before Justice Simone Morris. The prosecution was represented by State Counsel Muntaz Ali and State Counsel Geneva Wills, while Defence Attorney Tonza Sarrabo represented the King.

Following the guilty verdict, Justice Morris adjourned the matter to July 17, 2025, at 9:00 hours for sentencing. Following the guilty verdict, King, who had been out on bail, was immediately taken into custody and remanded to prison.

King faced a similar charge in 2009 but was acquitted by a jury after a trial at the High Court in Georgetown in 2016.
