
Four men have been remanded to prison after being charged on Thursday for robbing several customers and the owners of a Chinese supermarket located at Number 66 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.




The accused are Jacob Fable, also known as “Samuel,” 58, a fisherman from Paramaribo, Suriname, and Manchester Village, Corentyne, Berbice; Andre Crandon, known as “Gun Man,” 38, a labourer from Lot 151 Little India, Corriverton, Berbice; Joshua Smith, referred to as “Bias,” 30, a construction worker from Lot 47 Liverpool Village, Corentyne, Berbice; and Fitztroy Joseph, known as “Mansel,” 27, a hire car driver from No. 77 Housing Scheme, Corriverton, Berbice.
According to reports, the robbery occurred on May 8 at the Golden Spring Chinese Supermarket, owned by Zing Hong. During the incident, the four accused allegedly robbed several individuals, including Zhingang Hu, a 38-year-old businessman, of $1.9 million in cash and a cell phone valued at $100,000, and Qun Wang, who was relieved of $300,000 in cash and a cell phone worth $100,000.
Additionally, Haresh Persaud was robbed of a Toyota Fielder Wagon bearing registration number HD 7448 and valued at $2.25 million, a Motorola cell phone valued at $40,000, a One Communications SIM card worth $2,000, a gold ring valued at $35,000, and $25,000 in cash.
Another victim, Totaram Roopram, 36, was robbed of a wallet valued at $2,500, $37,000 in cash, a Samsung Galaxy A15 valued at $45,000, and an E-SIM card worth $2,500. His relative, 54-year-old Chandrawattie Roopram, lost a gold bangle worth $100,000 and a pair of gold earrings valued at $50,000.
Lynette Shankar was reportedly robbed of $898,000 in cash, $652 in U.S. currency (equivalent to GYD 136,550), €20 in Euros (equivalent to GYD 4,680), a Samsung Galaxy A14 valued at $58,000, a Samsung A02 worth $35,000, along with an identification card and several bank cards.
Other victims included Shavnarine Richard, who was robbed of $30,000 in cash and a Samsung A12 valued at $20,000, and Mohamed Shakar, who lost a Samsung A04 valued at $40,000 and a gold ring worth $170,500.
The four men were not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge. The prosecution objected to bail, and Magistrate Tuanna Hardy granted the request.
The accused were remanded to prison, and the case was transferred to the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court, where it is scheduled to be heard on June 11.
