The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has issued an official call for local organisations to apply for accreditation to serve as election observers for the General and Regional Elections slated for September 1, 2025.

This initiative, in accordance with Section 4E of the Representation of the People Act (RoPA), aims to promote transparency, impartiality, and credibility in the electoral process.

Only organisations with a strong track record and relevant experience will be considered, the Commission noted.

Furthermore, the election body said that applicants must demonstrate knowledge of electoral laws, experience in election monitoring, and the ability to work impartially under pressure.

In addition, strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to democracy and human rights are essential.

Applications must include the organisation’s background, contact details, information on proposed observers, past relevant activities, proof of registration, and the administrative regions to be observed.

GECOM stressed that all decisions regarding accreditation will be final. Interested organisations must use the official Observer Application Form, available via the Resource Hub on www.gecom.org.gy, and submit completed forms to the Chief Election Officer at GECOM’s Fort Street office in Kingston, Georgetown, by Thursday, 31 July 2025.

The Commission emphasised the crucial role that local observers play in ensuring that the electoral process adheres to democratic standards.

Observers monitor polling day activities, report irregularities, and help legitimise the results through independent assessments.
