General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Bharrat Jagdeo, on Thursday called on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to crack down on parties that fraudulently list citizens as backers or intimidate individuals from supporting rival parties.

Speaking at his weekly press conference at Freedom House, Robb Street, Jagdeo expressed concern over what he described as underhanded tactics being deployed ahead of Guyana’s September 1, 2025, General and Regional Elections.

“GECOM should take firm action against any party threatening people not to go on any party’s list. They should also take action against parties fraudulently putting backers on their list,” Jagdeo said.

He warned that some political operatives might be misleading citizens into signing nomination forms under false pretences. “They tell people they’re signing up for sports teams or cash grants, and then use those names as nominators for their party lists,” Jagdeo alleged.

Under Guyana’s electoral regulations, parties contesting the elections must submit approved symbols and Lists of Candidates, including a National Top-Up List naming the presidential candidate, with at least 42 candidates and between 300 and 330 nominators nationwide.

Regional and constituency lists require a set number of backers from their respective areas.

Jagdeo made it clear that the PPP/C will closely monitor the process in the weeks ahead, stating that the party will “pay keen attention” to ensure the integrity of the nomination process is protected.
