GGMC warns miners to follow the law or face tough enforcement

The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) is once again putting miners on notice that stronger enforcement will be coming for those found breaching mining regulations across the country. The warning follows a directive from President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali for tougher action against illegal practices in the industry.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commission stressed that the laws governing the mining sector apply to everyone nationwide, including communities operating within Amerindian Titled Lands that wish to pursue mining as a source of income.

GGMC said it remains ready to assist these communities with the necessary knowledge and support to obtain the correct documentation, register mining equipment, and properly record all gold that is produced and sold.

The Commission reminded miners that all gold must be sold to legitimate buyers such as the Guyana Gold Board, licensed dealers, and licensed traders. Any gold sold outside of these channels is considered illegal, and could result in gold being confiscated, assets seized, and charges laid.

According to the GGMC, gold declarations continue to be lower than expected, despite high market prices and increasing mining activity across the districts. The agency said this situation is unacceptable, particularly since environmental damage is still being seen, even with ongoing education and enforcement efforts.

GGMC also noted that it will be intensifying collaboration with other state bodies, as directed by President Ali and the Ministry of Natural Resources, to clamp down on lawlessness and ensure the country benefits properly from its mineral wealth.

The Commission is calling on all miners to operate responsibly and comply with the law, or be ready to face the consequences.
